My Attempt to Grow Food!

Ok, looky what I did today! I worked on our vegetable garden!

First off, let me say that I know I’m about a month late, but I figure better late than never. I also know that my backyard weeds need a mowin; but when I mowed yesterday, Steve and Simon were still taking off sod so I mowed around that area. (Also, for the record, we have so many weeds in the back yard because I’m afraid of putting chemicals down where the dog plays.)

I’ve wanted to start a garden ever since we moved in here three years ago, but this year we felt more motivated since food prices have been going up and up. If we actually grow anything, I might even try my hand at canning and freezing stuff to put away for later!

This morning, I got up and fired up the tiller and tilled the whole thing myself. (I probably won’t ever have to till it again, but there hasn’t been a garden there since before my husband’s grandmother passed away in the early nineties, so I figured it could use it for this first season.) Simon raked it out for me, and then Linus made footprints across a few times. They’re both so helpful! (Ok, Simon more so than Linus.)

After it was all ready to plant, I decided to come in and print some graph paper and come up with a plan. I already bought seeds off the internet, and I have four tomato plants, two bell pepper plants, and a flat of eighteen marigolds for the perimeter. You’d think I would have had sense enough to come up with a plan before I even bought seeds, but you’d be wrong. Oh well, this is my first garden in at least ten years, and something like my third garden in my whole life so I’m cutting myself a whole lot of slack.

Here’s my big plan:

I just realized that it’s not completely legible, so I’ll just tell you that I’m going to try to grow spinach, eggplant, zucchini, yellow summer squash, bell peppers, green onions, green bush beans, edamame, carrots, and four different kinds of tomato. We also have two blueberry bushes and a rhubarb patch, so hopefully you’ll see recipes that use all of the above.

I just pulled some rhubarb on my way in, so don’t be surprised if you see it in the not so distant future.

  1. Shaye, I love your plan! And the little pics are so cute! And it’s totally legible–I had no trouble reading it.

  2. This is wonderful! I’m going to try to put a tiny garden in and I’ve been procrastinating so I’m going to totally piggyback on your plans… (because it’s the planning, not the tilling and the weeding that’s keeping me from creating a garden. I’m thinking rhubarb too– it’s very low maintenace. Good for you! Do you think it costs less to grow the veggies?

  3. Wow, I am so jealous of all your space! That rocks, and I am sure you will do great with it! My husband found this little salsa growing kit on clearance at walmart and has dilligently planted and watered. But, I swear, he dumped like a whole packet of seeds in each little square and I think every single seed has grown! Now I am panicked because I don’t know where I’m going to plant them all! I may have found a good plot in the yard, but dang, it’s gonna take some serious work to get it started. Do you have animal problems? I am wondering what some good tricks are for keeping out birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, muskrats, snakes, geese, ducks, dogs, cats, the occasional deer, LOL.

  4. Thanks L! I commandeered Simon’s colored pencils that he just brought home on the last day of school. 😉

Renae, I’ve only spent about $25 on garden stuff, so I figure that even if I get just a little produce it’ll be $25 worth! Hopefully I’ll get a lot and have to preserve it–I mean “put it up” for the winter. lol

Jessica, we have a family of bunnies living under our shed, and I’m a little afraid of the wrath they’ll bring to my carrots. We also have Linus the Corgi mix who needs to learn to avoid the whole place. My husband says that his grandma told him that marigolds help keep animals away, so I’m planting a border of marigolds all the way around. I’m also diggin’ your chicken wire idea if the marigolds fail.

  5. Hi Shay,
Totally not related to your garden, which is still very cool, but I wanted to make sure you could see the link to Peanut Butter Boy.

He doesn’t have the recipes links up yet. (or didn’t last time I looked.)

  6. Are the marigolds supposed to keep insects out of your garden?

Great looking spot for a garden. Can’t wait to have my own spot to grow mine! I’m currently growing tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries, basil, chilies, and a couple others on my balcony right now.

  7. Renae, thanks for the peanut butter link! (I’m fascinated by the idea of the peanut butter cornbread.)

Mary, the reason for the marigolds is two-fold. One is to try to repel pests, but the other is nostalgia. We live in the house that was my husband’s grandparents’ once upon a time. His grandmother had her garden in the same spot when he was a child. He mentioned that he fondly remembers that she always had marigolds planted around her garden, so I put them in for him. 😉

  9. Ann, we should switch husbands because my husband thinks I’m anal. lol
He said I confirmed it when I used little sticks with twine to mark my rows to make sure I planted my seeds straight. 😉
